Gottman Method Couples Therapy
Perhaps you’re finding yourselves:
- Having the same arguments over and over again
- Feeling more like housemates than partners
- Walking on eggshells around certain topics
- Struggling to rebuild trust after hurt or betrayal
- Feeling lonely, disconnected or misunderstood
- Wondering whether things can really change
- Talking about problems without ever resolving them
- Loving each other, but no longer knowing how to reach each other
You’re not alone
According to Dr. John Gottman’s research, couples often become trapped in predictable patterns of conflict,
criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal, and disconnection.
The problem isn’t that you’re broken or incompatible.
More often, it’s that the two of you have become caught in a cycle that neither of you knows how to escape.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy helps couples identify these patterns and develop healthier ways of communicating,
repairing conflict, rebuilding trust, and strengthening connection.
What is Gottman Method Couples Therapy?
Most couples don’t get stuck because they don’t love each other. They get stuck because they become trapped in patterns of interaction that slowly erode trust, connection, friendship, and intimacy. The same arguments repeat. The same misunderstandings occur. One partner pursues, the other withdraws. Small disagreements become larger conflicts. Over time both people can begin to feel unheard, misunderstood, lonely, or disconnected.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy helps couples identify and change these patterns.
Developed from more than four decades of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method is one of the world’s most respected and evidence-based approaches to couples therapy. Their research has helped identify the habits, behaviours, and interaction patterns that strengthen relationships, as well as those that predict relationship breakdown.
Rather than simply providing a space to talk, Gottman Method Couples Therapy offers a structured framework for understanding what
is happening in your relationship and creating meaningful change.
Together we work to:
- Reduce recurring conflict and unproductive arguments
- Improve communication and emotional understanding
- Rebuild trust following hurt, disappointment, or betrayal
- Strengthen friendship, fondness, and admiration
- Increase emotional and physical intimacy
- Develop healthier ways of navigating disagreements
- Create a stronger sense of partnership and teamwork
In-person training with Dr. John Gottman
The goal is not to create a perfect relationship.
The goal is to help couples move from feeling stuck and disconnected to feeling understood, supported, and connected again.
I primarily work from a Gottman Method framework and have trained directly with Drs. John and Julie Gottman. My work is also informed by the approaches of Terry Real and Stan Tatkin, integrating practical relationship skills, attachment-based understanding, and deeper work around the patterns that keep couples stuck.
Every couple is different. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, therapy is tailored to the specific challenges, strengths, and goals of your relationship.
Most couples wait too long…
According to research from Dr. John Gottman, couples on average wait more than seven years after problems begin before seeking professional help.
By the time many couples arrive in therapy, they have already had the same conversation hundreds of times.
The same arguments have been repeated. The same hurts have accumulated. Both partners have begun protecting themselves from further disappointment.
What often starts as frustration can gradually become resentment, distance, loneliness, and disconnection.
The good news is that you don’t have to wait until the relationship is in crisis before seeking support.
In fact, the earlier couples seek help, the easier it is to interrupt unhealthy patterns and create meaningful change.
If you are reading this page, chances are that some part of you already knows that something needs to change.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Imagine how you and your partner would feel if:
- You no longer had the same argument every week.
- You felt understood instead of misunderstood.
- Difficult conversations no longer turned into conflict.
- You trusted that your partner was on your side.
- You felt emotionally connected again.
- You knew how to repair disagreements before they escalated.
- You felt appreciated, valued, and respected.
- You could talk honestly without fear of criticism, defensiveness, or withdrawal.
- You felt more like partners and less like opponents.
- You looked forward to spending time together again.
Many couples arrive in therapy feeling hopeless, exhausted, or convinced that nothing will ever change.
Yet relationships can change dramatically when couples learn to recognise the patterns that
keep them stuck and develop new ways of relating to each other.
Meaningful change is possible.
